{"id":1326,"date":"2009-12-01T02:05:18","date_gmt":"2009-12-01T02:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/?p=1326"},"modified":"2009-12-01T04:29:33","modified_gmt":"2009-12-01T04:29:33","slug":"half-marathon-training-week-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/01\/half-marathon-training-week-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Half Marathon Training, Week 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How did the first week go?\u00a0 I&#8217;ll tell ya.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net\/hs034.snc3\/12167_191982034449_789139449_2767689_23910_n.jpg\" alt=\"About to do the chicken (turkey) dance?\" width=\"203\" height=\"362\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">About to do the chicken (turkey) dance?<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Monday: 5 mile pace (let\u2019s call it a tempo)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check.\u00a0 I felt much better after completing this one.\u00a0 Instead of BARELY finishing under 10 min\/mile pace, I came in at 46 and some change.\u00a0 Much closer to where I need to be.\u00a0 It was a little faster than normal tempo pace for the rest of the training, but more purposed towards a &#8220;test run&#8221; for my race.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday: DDR circuit (these are still kicking my butt wonderfully)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check.\u00a0 This is great cross training.\u00a0 I need to come up with something else to do occasionally but damn it&#8217;s a nice little cardio\/weights\/awesome home butt kicking workout all in an hour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday: yoga\/rest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check.\u00a0 I actually wanted to work out this day and felt weird resting but it was all good because then I was rested for my&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday: 5 mile RACE (let\u2019s call this my long run)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check.\u00a0 I was aiming for under 45 minute, but once I ran through the course itself with it&#8217;s myriad of HILLS (there is one street on the course I hate WALKING up or BIKING up, let alone running as fast as I can up it towards the end of the 5th mile), I was perfectly happy with 45:50.\u00a0 A little intimidated that it&#8217;s right about the pace I&#8217;m aiming to run the half at, but hey, I&#8217;ve got 11 weeks, right? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday: DDR circuit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check.\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t want to, but did it anyway.\u00a0 Felt just dandy after.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saturday: 4\u00d7400 sprints (1 mile w\/up + c\/down, 400m recovery in between)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check.\u00a0 Zliten and I went to the track and he got a nice jog in while I did my sprints.\u00a0 All sprints were between 1:50 &#8211; 1:58.\u00a0 It was a little harder than I remembered, but I also think I was not 100% and starting to get sick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday: rest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah.\u00a0 I was pretty much in sick mode and didn&#8217;t leave the couch much at all besides some delicious chinese food.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 372px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net\/hs034.snc3\/12167_191982059449_789139449_2767691_932727_n.jpg\" alt=\"15k people on a Thursday morning look like this.\" width=\"362\" height=\"203\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">15k people on a Thursday morning look like this.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So what&#8217;s up for this next week?<\/p>\n<p>To be quite honest, I feel crappy and unsure about even calling this week 2.\u00a0 Mostly, because I feel crappy myself.\u00a0 Yesterday I started to come down with something (ok, probably Saturday but I ignored it&#8230;bad Quix) and today it&#8217;s still here.\u00a0 My throat is sore, my nose is a wee bit runny and plugged, and I&#8217;m going from hot to cold to hot to cold to hot in literally 5 minutes.\u00a0 Normally, I&#8217;m just coldcoldcold *momentofcomfort* coldcoldcold, so I know I&#8217;m out of whack.<\/p>\n<p>I probably could push through and run today if my life depended on it,\u00a0 hell, a year or 2 ago I probably would have, but after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2006\/HEALTH\/11\/09\/HM.ill.exercise\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">reading<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.criticalbench.com\/working-out-when-sick.htm\" target=\"_blank\">up<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/findarticles.com\/p\/articles\/mi_m0675\/is_6_19\/ai_80369005\/\" target=\"_blank\">on<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bodybuilding.com\/fun\/maia20.htm\" target=\"_blank\">workouts<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.associatedcontent.com\/article\/1775170\/should_you_work_out_while_sick.html?cat=5\" target=\"_blank\">while<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresinjuggling.wordpress.com\/2009\/11\/03\/shred-a-cold-run-a-fever\/\" target=\"_blank\">sick<\/a>, the general consensus is:<\/p>\n<p>-Stick to light\/moderate intensity workouts and no heavy weights.\u00a0 Sadly, I don&#8217;t think sprints are in this category.<\/p>\n<p>-If you just have head cold symptoms, you can workout (but still lighter than normal).\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have any lung issues, but the fact that I sweat through 2 pairs of PJs last night and the hotcoldhotcold makes me think that perhaps it&#8217;s a sign to chillax.<\/p>\n<p>-If you&#8217;re feeling tired, it&#8217;s probably best to rest (and considering I rested ALL DAY yesterday, went to sleep at 11pm, dragged myself out of bed at 9:30am, and I&#8217;m still dragging ass today &#8211; I&#8217;ll call that tired).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 372px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net\/hs034.snc3\/12167_191982069449_789139449_2767692_2694647_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"203\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">And this is what 15k people look like once they get going...<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>So the plan for this next week was:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Monday: 4&#215;800 sprints<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday: DDR circuit<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday: 4 mile tempo<\/p>\n<p>Thursday: DDR circuit<\/p>\n<p>Friday: 6 mile run<\/p>\n<p>Weekend: rest<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, this is not going to happen.\u00a0 I expect the week to look more like this:<\/p>\n<p>Monday: sleeeeeep<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday: light DDR (no weights)<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday: 4 mile VERY SLOW<\/p>\n<p>Thursday: DDR circuit<\/p>\n<p>Friday: 4&#215;800 sprints<\/p>\n<p>Saturday: 6 mile run<\/p>\n<p>Sunday: rest<\/p>\n<p>I normally would not do sprints and my long run back to back, but considering 6 miles isn&#8217;t THAT long, I can probably do it, as long as I&#8217;m feeling 100% by then.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also entirely possible that the week might look like this, depending on how long I feel crappy:<\/p>\n<p>Monday:\u00a0 sleeeeeep<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday: sleeeeeeep<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday: walk around the block<\/p>\n<p>Thursday: light DDR<\/p>\n<p>Friday: walk around the two surrounding blocks<\/p>\n<p>Weekend: rest<\/p>\n<p>I am just going to play it by ear.\u00a0 If I feel crappy, I&#8217;m gonna rest.\u00a0 If I feel ok, I&#8217;m going to workout.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also going to remember that I have 10 more weeks after this one to make it through, and the only way to do that is to recover fully as quickly as possible.\u00a0 And risking injury by pushing through workouts when I feel this crappy is NOT the way to do it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net\/hs034.snc3\/12167_191982044449_789139449_2767690_5585036_n.jpg\" alt=\"There we go.
