{"id":5559,"date":"2016-02-05T20:09:06","date_gmt":"2016-02-06T02:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/?p=5559"},"modified":"2016-04-12T18:42:15","modified_gmt":"2016-04-13T00:42:15","slug":"this-is-what-im-doing-right-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/05\/this-is-what-im-doing-right-now\/","title":{"rendered":"This is what I&#8217;m doing right now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week has been a rollercoaster for me, and for no real reason.\u00a0 Monday, I was OVERJOYED because I was able to run again.\u00a0 Monday night and Tuesday, my hip was a little cranky, so I was crushed.\u00a0 I was looking forward to a nice week of running but it was not to be.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/oct13-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5284\" src=\"http:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/oct13-3.jpg\" alt=\"oct13-3\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/oct13-3.jpg 592w, https:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/oct13-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/oct13-3-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>I felt like I was between a rock and a hard place with marathon training.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We took Tuesday to be a &#8220;treat yo self&#8221; day because we were both being grumps, splurging on a 25 dollar lobster roll for lunch (at least we split it), and going for massages after work instead of biking or swimming or going to the bar or just going to fucking sleep at 6pm, because all of those things were actually options on the table for me.<\/p>\n<p>During the massage, which was the right call, I sorted through a lot of thoughts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First of all,<\/strong> I am ridiculous having lobster sandwiches and getting massages like a rap star, or something.\u00a0 Only a complete asshole can call that a bad day.\u00a0 That one actually made me giggle out loud.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second of all,<\/strong> I may be freaking out about pulling back on the run mileage this month, but it&#8217;s going to be fine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/fine.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5565\" src=\"http:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/fine.jpg\" alt=\"fine\" width=\"581\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/fine.jpg 581w, https:\/\/adjustedreality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/fine-300x146.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Really.\u00a0 This is fine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got this pretty darn big engine right now. I&#8217;ve been specifically training for long distance stuff since August, and the body doesn&#8217;t just up and forget that shit in 2 weeks (but what it DOES do in 2 weeks is get rested and rested legs are AWESOME!).<\/p>\n<p>This is the engine that let me bust out a 7k swim when I&#8217;ve done less than that TOTAL since September, and be relatively fine after the fact.\u00a0 This is the engine that busted out a spectacular 20 miler 2 weeks into marathon training in October after just a couple 13s and two 15s.\u00a0 This is the engine that&#8217;s going to get me across the marathon finish line JUST FINE if I don&#8217;t let my head get in the way.\u00a0 As long as I don&#8217;t sit on my ass and do nothing for the next 5 weeks, the engine will be alright.<\/p>\n<p>My body and mind have let me know that the portion of the cycle that involve beating myself senseless with miles is over.\u00a0 Done. Finito.\u00a0 It was a necessary part of building that engine to be what it is, but now it&#8217;s time to put some gas in it and rev it up a little.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to move over to (something similar to) the FIRST marathon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wu.ece.ufl.edu\/marathon%20training-first%20marathon.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">training program<\/a> for the last 5 weeks of this cycle.\u00a0 It looks something like this on a typical week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monday: track work &#8211; something like 10 min warmup, 3&#215;1600 w\/400m recovery, 10 min cooldown.<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday: bike, swim, or easy run (I&#8217;m only going to run if I&#8217;m really itching to run) for up to 1 hour<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday: tempo work &#8211; 1 mile easy, 4 miles tempo (I&#8217;d call my tempo about 10 mile race pace), 1 mile easy.<\/li>\n<li>Thursday: bike, swim, or easy run<\/li>\n<li>Friday: off<\/li>\n<li>Saturday: long run &#8211; this week I&#8217;m going for 18 miles, no slower overall than 11:30\/mile (says marathon pace + 30 seconds &#8211; I&#8217;d like to run 11:00\/mile, so that&#8217;s that)<\/li>\n<li>Sunday: bike, swim, or easy run<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ll put it this way &#8211; I attacked the tempo workout today, and it was FUCKING AMAZING running on fresh legs with a pretty motivated mind.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty excited to finish out the last 5 weeks before March 5th now, whereas before I was like FUCK, can I just get this over with?\u00a0 Can I drop to the half?\u00a0 Can I just go to sleep for a week?\u00a0 This is good progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third of all,<\/strong> the massuse hit some pretty rough spots where I had to really work through it so I didn&#8217;t flail around.\u00a0 For some reason the words &#8220;THIS IS WHAT I&#8217;M DOING RIGHT NOW&#8221; came to me and I spent a while thinking about how this has to be 2016&#8217;s mantra right now.<\/p>\n<p>In workouts or races where the shit is starting to hit the fan, I need to focus on THIS CURRENT MOMENT.\u00a0 Not get intimidated because there are a lot more moments to go before I hit the finish line.\u00a0 Running up this hill is hard and maybe I have to do it three more times, but this is what I&#8217;m doing right now.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if I can sustain this pace for another 10 miles, but this is what I&#8217;m doing right now and I&#8217;ll worry about that&#8230; then.<\/p>\n<p>At work, multitasking is actually my job.\u00a0 I handle multiple projects and people and interface with a bunch of different departments, all with their own concerns and agendas and questions and ideas.\u00a0 On the rare day where I just get to hunker down and do ONE thing with actual focus, it&#8217;s seriously meditative to me.\u00a0 However, it&#8217;s definitely not the norm.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to get lost and focus on the wrong thing or give up and do nothing because I&#8217;m too scattered.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been a little more productive this year utilizing a to do list, but I can also help myself by picking a focus for a set amount of time.\u00a0 Five minutes, an hour, a day, depending on my schedule, but telling myself THIS IS WHAT I&#8217;M DOING RIGHT NOW will help me not give up and just surf instagram to collect my thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>In all aspects of life I&#8217;m a planner.\u00a0 That&#8217;s awesome because I get a lot out of life by being efficient.\u00a0 However, I spend a lot of my time thinking about the future, and as I discovered, that steals some of the joy out of the present.<\/p>\n<p>I may be looking forward to my long weekend staycation adventure over president&#8217;s day, but currently, I&#8217;m writing this blog.\u00a0 This is what I&#8217;m doing right now.
